Happy New Year!

May 2018 be a year of health happiness and continued success.

It may be a new year calendar wise, but for ISM – NJ we are half way through our year.

This is a great time to consider where you are and where you would like to be.

What will be your focus or goal in 2018?

Everyone needs at least one as this is the road for continuous improvement!

Change is a constant and if you do not move, you will be left behind.

Is there a new skill you need in your career toolbox?

Would you like to engage with your supply management colleagues more in order to feel the pulse of the market?

Do you want to energize your activities?

Some suggestions:

  • January Membership Meeting on Jan 10th – Who will be there to network with?
  • Seminar – Supplier Relationship Management Fundamentals workshop (Jan. 11th) or Webinar – Strategic Sourcing Methodology – Is this a skill set you need in your current position or a tool that you need to  sharpen?
  • ISM is energizing the CPSM Exam – there will be an update to the CPSM Exam in the Fall, 2018.  The last day to take the exams with the current criteria is August 31, 2018.  ISM – NJ  has scheduled a webcast of CPSM Exam 2 Review – Do you want to complete the review and certify before the changes are updated?

These are only some of the activities ISM – NJ has scheduled.  Please look at our calendar as our goal is to keep you informed and continually keeping you at the top of your game!  If you have a specific topic of interest that we have not offered in the past, please let us know.  We love to receive your feedback so we can serve you better.

Again, may 2018 be a great year for you!

ISM-NJ Executive Message

deborah_augustus_crogged      Executive Message – Deborah Augustus, CPSM, C.P.M., President-Elect

As we begin to close out the first quarter of 2017, I sit here reflecting on my To-Do list for the year and wonder how this is all going to get done!  Time is moving so quickly, but focusing is the best way to achieve your goals.  Focus on the road ahead of you; looking behind at what was only gets you stuck in a rut.  Learn from your past and gain momentum for the future.  Challenges are a way of life and are everywhere.  Choose to take those learnings and forge ahead.  We do this by reflecting, planning, and doing.  Goals are set; now is the time to do.  Continue to network with colleagues; challenge yourself to do better, and be open to learn something new each day.  ISM-NJ is here to support you in all of your goals.  Here are a few ways we do that:  network through breakfast/dinner meetings, conferences like Supply Management Forum and Women & Leadership Conferences, and many opportunities for seminars/webinars.   Check out our website for more detailed information at www.ismnj.org.

March is Supply Management month; the ISM-NJ has been providing you with a full day of content for the last 16 years.  2017 is no different!  The Supply Management Forum is being held on March 24, 2017, from 8 am to 3:30 pm.  We travel this year to Princeton University to learn more about Procurement in the 21st Century.  The agenda starts with a session on Delivering Strong Value When You Are Not the Expert.  This is followed by a session on Procurement Finance.  The afternoon will start with a panel on Emerging Professionals and how they got where they are today.  The panel includes our very own President of ISM-NJ, Tamra Pawloski of Chubb, and she is joined by Elizabeth Rivett of J&J and Andrew George of Teva Pharmaceuticals.  To round out the day, we look at Contract Management from a key procurement partner perspective, legal counsel.  A lot of planning is going on behind the scenes to bring you this forum; there is something for everyone to take away from this day conference.  I’ve attended many ISM-NJ Supply Management Forum and can’t wait to gain insights from these subject matter experts.  Looking forward to seeing you all there!

It’s hard to believe the 2016/2017 ISM year is going to close out in just a few short months.  To that end, we are soliciting your nominations for our Crystal Awards coming up on June 14th.  This award recognizes an individual’s success in promoting the purchasing profession, significant contributions to the bottom line, diversity/minority development, leadership qualities, environmental and recycling commitments, and the initiation of innovative programs.  If you know a leader who promotes the procurement profession wholeheartedly, please complete the nomination form to recognize their contributions in our field.  Remember, it’s not just in a title; who do you know that fits the criteria?  The best form of flattery is recognition.

We are also accepting nominations for the Diamond award; this is an award that goes to a woman to honor her leadership and mentoring of women in supply management.  The Diamond award will be presented during our fall conference scheduled on October 26th and 27th, Women & Leadership.  Do you know someone who fits this description?  Please take time to draft your nomination.  It will make you feel good, as well as, the recipient.  We grow as we build each other up.

As winter turns to spring, take time for yourselves to learn something new, enjoy the coming warmer weather and flowers to bloom, and grow in the way you think and the output of the work you perform.  Turn to your colleague and ask if they know about ISM-NJ and offer what you get out of your membership.  What do you get out of your membership?  The more members we have in our organization, the more opportunities we have to learn more from each other.  So recruit a member, join a committee, volunteer your time to lead, network-network-network.  You never know what opportunities will come your way!   And as I’ve said before, thanks for being a part of this great organization because you are part of what makes it so great!

Executive Message – October

Deborah_Augustus_crogged.jpg             Deborah Augustus, CPSM, C.P.M., A.P.P., President-Elect

I hope everyone enjoyed the last of their summer adventures as we move into the final quarter of the year.  Autumn has arrived, and school is back in full gear.  This is a great time of year to reassess your goals, both for learning and career aspirations.  ISM offers many opportunities to help in both these key areas of development.  Make sure you bookmark our new website as it has many tools to help you as you go about your day.

Be sure to join us for our October Breakfast meeting at the Olde Mill Inn/Grain House in Basking Ridge, NJ on October 6th.  Professor Eric Larson of the Rutgers Business School will be discussing Millennials – Must I “Re-train to Retain?”  We always engage in such thought-provoking discussions that early in the morning as the true professionals that we are.

Another October opportunity to participate in an ISM activity is our well received Women & Leadership Conference. This will be conducted on October 13th and 14th at the Wyndham Hamilton Park Conference Center in Florham Park, NJ.  All are welcome!!  Sign up now to be a part of this wonderful, engaging, and inspiring conference.  The Keynote Presentation is “Thriving in the Gap:  Dealing with the Reality while Building your Desired Future” with Karla Robertson.  This, plus many other topics, is why this conference is a favorite and well attended each year.

Here’s to another great month of networking, learning, and building on our own successes.  Stay connected to ISM through our many channels of communications: our website, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.  We are always available to assist you in navigating careers, projects, and networking.  All you have to do is reach out.  Your board members, as well as the rest of the membership, are here, anytime.    Make sure you get a chance to get out and enjoy the autumn weather before it’s gone.  And as always, thanks for being a part of this great organization!
